Quayola’s sculptures are also left unfinished, with the intent to document the actual logic and aesthetics of the process itself, which becomes the true subject of the artwork.
Fighters is a series of sculptures made from Carrara white marble using an algorithmically controlled robotic arm. This work continues Quayola’s exploration of sculptural heritage through new algorithmic gestures, drawing inspiration from Michelangelo’s Captives (1510-1530), a series of never-completed sculptures which became emblematic for the expressiveness embedded in their exposed process of creation. Quayola’s sculptures are also left unfinished, with the intent to document the actual logic and aesthetics of the process itself, which becomes the true subject of the artwork.
In Fighters the sculptural process does not document a human gesture but rather the non-human virtuosity of the algorithmically controlled robotic arm.
